Thoughts on: "Time & Again" (Demo 2)
Hello forum denizens!
I am nearly finished playing through most of the content in the current demo ("Time & Again"), and thought I would start off a discussion thread for it.
Below are my thoughts organized into categories. Feel free to add your own thoughts as well!
(Disclaimer: Obviously this is a demo and not a completed product. My notes on typos and glitches aren't complaints, they are simply there to make the developer aware of issues that they may not have been aware of. If you want to avoid my nitpicking, don't expand those categories! )
There is probably something spoiler-y below.
Overall (my wife and) I thought it was great!
I'm really enjoying how the devs are handling it, and am excited to see how it grows!

There is probably something spoiler-y below.
- My Favorite Bits:
- When Polly saves your game for you when you don't talk to Faith, Oh my- I laughed so much! It even created a save point in the autosave section!
- Just the fact that Polly 'glomps' people
- The mention of the rock collecting club cracked me up. I suspect Polly has a dour sister who participates in that club.
- I liked the name 'Aphelion Valley'.
- I found something interesting in Polly's bonus scene... *elephant noises*
- When Polly saves your game for you when you don't talk to Faith, Oh my- I laughed so much! It even created a save point in the autosave section!
- My Favorite Quotes:
- "Ms. Celena lets out a soft chuckle while my heart beats harder than a dubstep drop."
- Tom (internal) - "Well, all I've got is a pocket full of doubt and a packet full of promises."
- Tom (internal) - "It seems I have become the captain of an unsinkable ship."
- Tom (internal) - "I heard ornithology's a real hoot this year!"
- Polly - "I Polly-Garuntee-it!"
- Polly
- "Ms. Celena lets out a soft chuckle while my heart beats harder than a dubstep drop."
- Typos:
- "I assume that isn't early enough to ensure you two make it here on time..."?
(I think this is a typo- it just doesn't make sense.)
- Solomon Meeting - "Aww, it appeared to be caught"?
(I think this is a typo- it just doesn't make sense.)
- First Faith meeting - "Fall festival fastly approaching"
- First Rosalyn meeting - "...perplexion..."
- First Rosalyn meeting - "night To answer your first question..."
(An extra word at the start of this line)
- Tom to Polly on Starswirl Night
- "I assume that isn't early enough to ensure you two make it here on time..."?
- Glitches:
- (My specs: High end PC, win8.0 x64, 2 Nvidia cards in SLI)
- When characters are interrupted by other characters, the game auto-skips through their text. This can make it really difficult to read that text. Both my wife and I were frustrated by this.
- There are several spots with no music / ambient sound for several minutes
- The game's icon showed up oddly for me:
- The auto-skip mode is slow when avatars have to change (ie, conversations). It is slower than clicking rapidly.
- When characters are interrupted by other characters, the game auto-skips through their text. This can make it really difficult to read that text. Both my wife and I were frustrated by this.
- Questions:
- What is Rosin? (The logo in the games opening screens.)
- Unless I am mistaken, the first demo make a point of the sandwich (on the train) not containing meat. Now the sandwich is normal. I would love to hear a dev talk about what their thoughts were on that, just for fun.
- I am a bit confused by the
cutie markswag cursors. Are they only for the Mane Six, and only after they have been named?
Why not for other named characters who also have their swag? (Dixie? Laura?)
I'm curious what the convention is for that. It's a very cool touch. - In the demo it look like there are finite save slots. I would like to beg and plead for infinite slots.
- In the save section, do the lettered save slots (a1... and q1...) indicated auto and quicksave slots?
- What is Rosin? (The logo in the games opening screens.)
Overall (my wife and) I thought it was great!

- Typos:
- "Aww, it appeared to be caught"?
(I think this is a typo- it just doesn't make sense.)
- First Faith meeting
Not a typo. Polly plays Pokemon, apparently. - "Fall festival fastly approaching"
- First Rosalyn meeting
Not a typo. "Fast" would be correct, but in general, when a character says something wrong, it's just the character. We subscribe to the characters don't always speak proper engilsh line of thinking. If there's a grammar error in descriptive text, then there's a problem. - "...perplexion..."
- First Rosalyn meeting
Not a typo. Same reason as before.
- "Aww, it appeared to be caught"?
- Questions:
- What is Rosin? (The logo in the games opening screens.)
Rosin is the name of the company. Zap Apple Project was never intended to be a company (hence, project). - Unless I am mistaken, the first demo make a point of the sandwich (on the train) not containing meat. Now the sandwich is normal. I would love to hear a dev talk about what their thoughts were on that, just for fun.
The scene with AJ and Rosalyn was written just for the first demo because we didn't have a good scene during the first day to include them in. It was meant to imply that Dixie isn't very good at cooking, but that seemed mean. She really is good at what she does, but it may take her a few tries to get it right. - I am a bit confused by the

The flair click-to-continue indicators are just for girls who have routes. - In the demo it look like there are finite save slots. I would like to beg and plead for infinite slots.
50 isn't enough? I bumped it up from 25, but I'll look into infinite. - In the save section, do the lettered save slots (a1... and q1...) indicated auto and quicksave slots?
Indeed. It's how Ren'Py labels them. I tried to figure out how to change that, but I didn't have enough time before the demo launch.
- What is Rosin? (The logo in the games opening screens.)
Noted the glitches. We're actually aware of all three. Again. Time constraints.
Thanks for the feedback!
Re: Thoughts on: "Time & Again" (Demo 2)
Ah, I just kind of assumed Rosalyn would be the most likely to use correct spelling, etc.Rainbow Wavedash wrote:We subscribe to the characters don't always speak proper engilsh line of thinking.
Good to know!
Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the information.Rainbow Wavedash wrote:The flair click-to-continue indicators are just for girls who have routes.
I'm a completion-ist, and tend to save frequently.Rainbow Wavedash wrote:50 isn't enough? I bumped it up from 25, but I'll look into infinite.
I would be very appreciative if you gave us the option of infinite saves. ^.^
No problem! I hope some part of it is helpful. Definitely let us know if there is other sorts of feedback that would be of aid.Rainbow Wavedash wrote:Indeed. It's how Ren'Py labels them. I tried to figure out how to change that, but I didn't have enough time before the demo launch.

Thanks for all the Rosalyn stuff, looking forward to the finished product :3
Send my regards to her writer(s).
Please hurry though, you gave me a sample and now I'm gonna be in withdrawal until it comes out. :c

Re: Thoughts on: "Time & Again" (Demo 2)
From just seeing the desktop backgrounds my internal route order was RarityRoslyn>ApplejackAnne>FluttershyFaith>RainbowdashRobin>PinkiePolly>TwilightTai
Then in the first demo it was Robin>Anne>Faith>Tai>Roslyn>Polly
Now the second demo came out, and its all changed again. Roslyn>Anne>Polly>Faith>Tai>Robin
In all seriousness though, I really enjoyed the second demo. It felt like a real game.

Re: Thoughts on: "Time & Again" (Demo 2)
Okay, so I remember reading that Tom's personality and opinions are decided depending on the choices you make, I think that's neat and I think there were a few of this kind of choice in the demo (e.g. who is prettier in 'Drinking Games'). The choice I wanted to comment on is one you get to make very late in the demo, whether to look for someone to bother or not.
At the time of choosing I felt that there were not much difference between the two, either find some random person to talk to or wait for some random person to talk to you. Later I thought that it might be one of the 'personality'-choices, Tom is either outgoing which draws Polly to him or comfortable alone which draws Roselyn to him.
Now it could just be me interpreting the choice that way, other might have thought the options very different from each other but they seemed alike to me at the time of choosing. I did, as I said, 'figure it out' later but that was... well, later. After I made the choice.
A suggestion I have which might solve this, and could be a nifty thing overall, is to have expanded option text akin to what Dreamfall: Chapters did. (Sorry about the large picture)
Basically have extra text appear on mouseover where Tom can elaborate and explain what the choice will mean. You could use the dialog box for this since it is empty during choices IIRC.
I understand if this would be a lot of work, especially from a programming standpoint, just wanted to put it out there.

To clarify the above picture: the choices are "Disappointment" and "Let it go", "Disappointment" is being mouseovered

Re: Thoughts on: "Time & Again" (Demo 2)
That particular one, you overthunk. It just changes who you run into. You don't get points towards that girl's route just by running into them.Hampulina93 wrote:Okay, so I remember reading that Tom's personality and opinions are decided depending on the choices you make, I think that's neat and I think there were a few of this kind of choice in the demo (e.g. who is prettier in 'Drinking Games'). Re: Thoughts on: "Time & Again" (Demo 2)
I ran through the Time and Again demo a feel times and I feel that all of the sprites (besides Polly) are kinda static. For example, the sprite for Tai always have her hands behind her back and never changing her pose. Polly is a lot more varied with different poses. I like to see sprites with different poses. Keep up the good work.
