You can 100% finish a few in less than an hour if you know what to look for.
Bible black infection for example took me 15 minutes blind.
same thing to me. kanon has h-scenes too (many of the visual novels you referenced do).
h-games just has more explicit content to use.
and they use the same formula in terms of production. they all have multiple endings, special requirements, choices, routes, etc.
I really don't see the point of differentiating of the same thing. A visual novel is a visual novel.

For me, as the producer, it's important to make that distinction. It lets me tell someone with confidence that we're making a visual novel and not a My Little Pony sex game.Ceresbane wrote: I really don't see the point of differentiating of the same thing. A visual novel is a visual novel.
Not that I haven't played and enjoyed my share of H-games, but you know what I'm sayin'.

Far from it, I'd say.
H-scenes don't equate to a h-game, just like sex scenes in a TV show (like the A Game of Thrones TV show adaption) don't make something porn.
The distinction, in my mind, is what you play it for. Nobody plays Monster Girl Quest, Let's Meow Meow or Bible Black (you get the picture) for the gripping story, they're played for the sex, but, in turn, nobody plays Kanon, Hoshizora no Memoria, Ever 17, Steins;Gate or what have you, for the h-scenes.
You differentiate them for the same reason you differentiate TV shows and porn, or anime/manga and hentai. Though porn and hentai might have a plot, that's not the reason it was made, and that's definitely not what people watch it for.
The two can be good in their own right, but there's a difference between a good porno and a good TV show, just like there's a distinction between a good, emotional VN and a h-game.

I want to read Planetarian, Kikokugai: The Cyber Slayer, and Little Busters in the unknown future.
To avoid leaving a post as weak as "I agree" and be done with it, I'll follow up on this. Kikokugai was bad, Little Busters was good, never got around to Planetarian.
Re: Favorite Visual Novel Games? Why?
Planetarian is exceptional. It's only roughly 3 hours long, so you really can't go wrong with giving it a go (if you only found it "meh" (I highly doubt you will), you only lose 3 hours), and I highly recommend you do. Well worth it.
The execution is perfect. Every word counts. Planetarian deserves to be played by everyone.

Cool to know, I still plan on reading it but I seem to have the problem of adding VN's on my To Read list quicker than I add VN's to my Have Read list. Actually, has anyone here read Maji de Watashi ni Koishinasai? Out of everything on my To Do List, that's the only one I really don't know much about.

if that were the case... why does it have a story to begin with? Just because it has more h-scenes means its writing is negligible?
that is a really shallow point of view to be taking.
I'm playing through monster quest right now and unlike bible black's terrible writing (he anime's plot is more involving plus the sex is hot too), I am actually curious to how the story of this game goes.
I can sorta predict it but not from the arc to arc basis. The ideas thrown out there are quite witty, sometimes ridiculous and funny and somewhat immersive (albeit requiring suspension of disbelief).
It's a different experience to Key's creations, heck I don't even consider it high art. But to merely dismiss it as mere trash, is completely ignorant to the fact that hentai as a genre has it's appeal to moe.
moe encompassing many levels of explicit content from the vanilla to ecchi to hentai. All the popular visual novel genres that we like and somewhere along the way have stereotyped to only be those types.
Visual novel as a term of semantics, doesn't specify anything beyond a narrative that is visual in nature, where it differentiates itself from film by the connotation that novels are a textual media.

In the post you quoted, actually just before the quote, Ceresbane said "The distinction, in my mind, is what you play it for". Again, what you play it for. The definition of Pornography from Webster is "The depiction of erotic behavior intended to cause sexual excitement", so if you go off that couldn't you say the Go Daddy commercials are technically porn? I think it should be up to the eye of the beholder, where the limit could range anywhere between a Victoria Secret catalog to pornhub.
Visual novel as a term of semantics, doesn't specify anything beyond a narrative that is visual in nature, where it differentiates itself from film by the connotation that novels are a textual media.
You trying to sabotage my other thread, before I even posted it?

As for Monster Girl Quest, well, I myself was quite the fan, but I really, really, /really/ can't ever consider it well written. There's Alice, for example. If you don't realise she's the Monster Lord within the first 5 minutes, you weren't paying enough attention. The whole plot's an Idiot Plot, a plot that only works because Luka is an idiot. The narrative is based around sex, and characters therefore cannot be properly developed. I could go on and on, but there are really too many things to choose from...
Ceresbane wrote:if that were the case... why does it have a story to begin with? Just because it has more h-scenes means its writing is negligible?
Just like in the cliché "I'M HERE TO FIX YOUR CABLES AND DELIVER PIZZA" porn story, sometimes it's required. Take Bible Black, for example. There would not be obsessive love, mind control (arguably), etc without the magic. The magic is a catalyst for the sex, but nobody plays for the catalyst, as that's not the reason for its existence. As in Monster Girl Quest, too, there would be no reverse monster girl rape without that story.
Ceresbane wrote:But to merely dismiss it as mere trash
I am NOT doing that. I've played through my fair share of h-games myself. I'm not saying VN = good, h-game = bad, just like I'm not saying porn is bad. The distinction, however, needs to be made between the two. The two are good in their own right, but not played for the same reasons. VNs are played for the story, h-games are played for the sex. There's nothing wrong with either, though they ARE radically different. That much is fact.

Re: Favorite Visual Novel Games? Why?
It was almost a year ago when I last posted in this thread with both praise and frustration regarding Tears 9, 10. Since then, I have started a few visual novels (both OELVNs and OJLVNs), but I have not finished any. I'm not entirely sure why... I think it's a combination of work related stress, interest in other fan activities, and apathy regarding computer games.
I finally found one that's held my interest long enough to finish a route: the PSP/Vita-compatible VN Sweet Fuse. There are several things about it that appeal to my interests...
1. Not relentlessly bleak or horrifying
2. Relatively worksafe
3. Not too much slice of life -- quite a few sequences of conflict and suspense
4. Relatively easy to understand the results of each choice
5. Alternative pairings -- something other than boy x girl(s)
6. It works on a handheld system, and does not drain battery power quickly
I plan to read at least a few more routes soon.

Re: Favorite Visual Novel Games? Why?
Ever17 Is probably my favorite VN.
Rewrite recently took the number two spot beating out Clannad after years.
Clannad is at number three.
Planetarium. This VN. Just thinking about it makes me feel sad. Only Utsuge VN I've read.
Maji de Watashi ni Koishinasai and S.
Katawa Shoujo One of the best Western VNs ever and free.
When they cry series Higurashi > Umineko > Higanbana
Muv-Luv and Muv-Luv Alternative were really good if you can get past the art style, and the massive genre shift. The ending of Alternative kinda ruined the VN imo though.
Monster Girl Quest. Yeah. It actually pretty good. Whenever I finished a part I really wanted to know what happened next. Definitely 18+ though.
Little Busters and Kanon. These are both great games, but they don't quite live up to Key's other VNs.
I've still a list of what I need to read such as Kira☆Kira, D.C., and Remember11.
I've a list of what I need to finish reading such as Hoshizora no Memoria and Grisaia no Kajitsu.
Wating on translations for Dracu-Riot, Fortune Arterial, and Kud Wafter.

Re: Favorite Visual Novel Games? Why?
I really liked it personally. Kinda Harem-ish but it does get down to a single girl per arc. It's sequel was also good. All the arcs feel quite a bit different and they more-or-less have every personality archetype covered between the two VNs. It's decently long.rockmanll wrote:

Re: Favorite Visual Novel Games? Why?
Favorite is probably a tie, actually. ;u; Between Clannad and Analogue: A Hate Story. Clannad because the love interest(s) have a ton more depth than you normally see in this type of VN, and Analogue because it's so different. Plus the story is super sad. ;~; BUT IT ONLY HAS TWO LOVE INTERESTS AND ONLY FOUR ENDINGS, which was disappointing. If there were more paths to choose from, it'd be my all time favorite. c:

I loved Clannad for a long time, not saying I don't anymore, but Key does have awful pacing. I still found Rewrite to be better in almost every way.

Re: Favorite Visual Novel Games? Why?
I got into Visual Novels sometime around late 2012. My first two games i played were Kira*Kira and Katawa Shoujo. I have a habit of stopping midway through things im focused on because 1. I require variety, and 2. I fear the end of what I love.
Over time i have amassed many visual novels, both popular and not, of a few different genres. I haven't played any VN's made before the 2000's though. I can't really name a favorite, all i can say is that I like some more than others. Ones based in a School background i liked Da-Capo, Clannad, Brass Restoration, Rewrite, Grisaia no Kajitsu, Muv-Luv, and Canvas 2. The ones i've liked that are based around slice of life would be Family Project, Sharin No Kuni, and Kira*Kira. I haven't played too many horrors or depressing VN's but without a doubt i liked Sekien no Inganock above all other darker stories.
I have not finished any Visual Novel at 100%. I just focus on one, get really far, then start on something else. But If anyone was curious or looking for something good, i could probably point out some good ones.

I'm not saying Clannad isn't good or enjoyable, cause it is. I'm pointing out that it can be hard to get into because Clannad and Little Busters have extra awful pacing issues. Even in Rewrite which is my current favorite key vn, the common arc goes a little long. Even knowing this I eagerly await a new key vn.

Right. It's still good, but unless you know what you're getting yourself into...
Re: Favorite Visual Novel Games? Why?
I've only read 3 visual novels, minus this one which I will read.
Katawa Shoujo, don't take it personally babe; it just ain't your story, and OMGWTFOTL.
Each one is kinda different story and length wise. But these are my rankings
1. Katawa Shoujo because it was just over all amazing for a fan made vn. It took about 15 hours to get through the main route and the character route on average. The story was well done and the characters were all diverse and easily to get along with. Even Misha.
2. OMGWTFOTL was very short, maybe 5-6 minutes just to read through. It is just a very ridiculous and funny vn overall, and there are many wtf's to see in it.
3. don't take it personally babe; it just ain't your story was alright. 5 hours was how long i got through reading twice through. The story was decent and the some characters were meh. But a love interest in there was cute as could be. If you read it you'll know who

Re: Favorite Visual Novel Games? Why?
I really can't decide. I liked all the visual novels I've read.
But if I had to pick a favourite, it'd probably be Saya no Uta. The only downside was that it was short. Way too short. You can finish this game in, like, 2 hours if you're a fast enough reader and don't take any breaks. And I made the disappointing mistake of blindly playing the True ending first, and then playing the other (shorter) endings afterwards.
I also really liked AIR by KEY, but as you can probably tell by the name of the developer, it made me cry harder than I have ever cried over a piece of fiction. Ever.

Wow, it's been over a year since I made this post? Remembered about these forms so paid a visit for the first time in a while. To add onto this, I still never got around to reading Planetarian, hated Kikokugai, and consider Little Busters a very close 2nd to Fate/Stay night (and Refrain probably being the best route in a VN I've read). My Top 5 as of now is probably F/SN > LB > Rewrite > G-Senjou no Maou > Tsukihime.
Re: Favorite Visual Novel Games? Why?
double post lol, sorry guiz :p
You like OMGWTFOTL and I can respect that, but a lot of the content is a reference to other VN's it's not all just 'random lol random'. Not trying to take anything away from your experience, but after you read about 10-15 big name VN's (if you do) you should try reading it again to see a bunch of references you missed the first time around.

I've only played a small bit of it(its still a bit pricey for me to full out buy and i don't want to pirate it) but i really like the vn demonbane.
